10 Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

We’ve been hearing more and more about our carbon footprint; what exactly is your carbon footprint, you ask? It’s basically how much carbon is released in the air by human activity, like burning fossil fuels. As the carbon dioxide is released into the air it creates a greenhouse gas which in return contributes to pollution and rising global temperatures. We can reduce our carbon footprint everyday by making a conscious effort, here are a few steps in the right direction.

1) Eat local.

Purchasing foods that are in season and grown locally can drastically cut down the carbon emissions of the vehicles used to transport these items to local markets.

2) Water, the essence of life.

If you still buy packaged bottled water, your should stop as you are doing a great disservice to our planet. Consider the environmental impact from the plastic bottle as well as how the water is transported to the supermarket. Save the planet and filter your own tap water in a reusable water tumbler.

3) Use sensible transportation.

When given a choice, walk or ride your bike to avoid carbon emissions completely. Carpooling and public transportation drastically reduce CO2 emissions by spreading them out over numerous riders.

4) Reduce what goes into landfills by recycling or re-purposing used items.

Participate in community recycling programs that promote sustainability. Rethink what you throw away. Donate items to thrift stores to give them yet another chance to find purpose before they end up in a landfill.

5) Change your light bulbs.

Switch your light bulbs to compact florescent lights (CFL), they use 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs. Go one step further and use LED bulbs, they last even longer than the CFL bulbs and don’t contain mercury.

6) Plant a tree.

A single tree can absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. This is the classiest way to give back to the environment and is one of the most efficient ways you can cut your carbon footprint. Trees provide shade and oxygen while consuming carbon dioxide.

7) Unplug your gadgets.

Give your electronics a rest. Power down your devices and unplug chargers when they’re not in use. Chargers will draw power from the outlet even when you’re not actively charging a device, so pull that plug!

8) Dispose of disposable items.

The average household generates about 4-5 pounds of trash a day. Divert the waste by using cloth rags instead of paper towels, glass dishes in place of paper plates, and cloth napkins as a replacement for paper napkins. 9) Stop junk mail.

It’s not only annoying, junk mail is wasteful. If you want to reduce your junk mail deliveries, register with the Direct Marketing Association (DMA)   and you will see a significant reduction in junk mail in about three months.

10) Don’t use black trash bags.

A simple switch from black trash bags to white can reduce your carbon footprint exponentially. The pigment found in black trash bags is not biodegradable, therefore they can’t be recycled and will sit in our landfills forever.
