No matter where you live, traditionally this is the time of year for the kids to head back to school. It’s always a good idea to end the summer on a positive note with a family activity that will leave the kids thanking you…I know, but it could happen, and here’s how:
It sounds like Mom has gone crazy, but the kids will love it and it’s one of those simple things they will remember for years to come. Who knows, it could become an annual tradition at your house. Make your ice cream dinner special with a stop at Lakeside Creamery to pick up amazing classic flavors like Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Mint Chocolate Chip, and other favorites. Be sure to ask about the unique flavor of the day, it may not last long! Pick up a quart of your favorite local handcrafted ice cream and don’t forget to pick up sprinkles and other festive toppings to make dinner something special.
Take the kids outside for a day of hiking and exploring with a destination in mind. Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunt game using GPS-enabled devices (most cell phone have the capability) to navigate coordinates and attempt to find the hidden geocache, a hidden container with contents to share. At last count, there were close to 3 million geocaches worldwide; and almost 500 in MD and at least 75 around Deep Creek Lake. Simply type in your zip code and start searching. It’s easy, fun, and best part of all—it’s free!
If you’ve ever been to a Maryland State Park, you know they are pristine, well equipped, and beautiful! Spend the day swimming at the Deep Creek Lake State Park, with a sandy beach and rentals of all sorts to keep everyone busy having a good time. Or if you prefer a hike in the shade of the forest, visit Swallow Falls State Park and walk among the ancient hemlocks, then stick your toes in the water where Muddy Creek meets the Youghiogheny. Pack a picnic lunch and spend the day!
You don’t have to shell out big bucks for an amusement park, take the gang to Smileys Fun Zone located in the heart of Deep Creek. With everything from bumper boats to batting cages and miniature golf to indoor laser tag, even the adults will be playing! Need a rainy day activity? Come to Smileys Fun Zone Arcade with all the latest arcade games and prizes; there is always something fun to do, whatever the reason or season.
Nothing says summer like a dip in the lake, but even better on an inflatable water park. New this summer at Deep Creek Lake, Splash Island at Will o’Wisp, offers slides, an obstacle course, water trikes, and other toys to make your day at the lake wet and wonderful. Call ahead for weather conditions and availability.
As summer ends, share a day as a family before the hectic schedule of the school year starts. Spend valuable face-to-face time with the most important audience you’ll ever have…your kids!
