5 Fun Things to do During the Start of School

We can’t believe the start of school is already here! No matter what grade your kids are going into, we have some fun ideas to ease back into things again. The start of a school year can be overwhelming for kids – new teachers, new classmates, or maybe even a new school.

There are many ways to make the start of school fun for your kids. Here are some ideas we have!

Have a Tie Dye Party With Kids from School (Elementary)

Invite the students from your child’s classroom over to make tie-dye shirts. Set up an area in your backyard with table cloths or trash bags so you can easily clean up the mess. Your child and their classmates will love this fun activity together. And the best part is they will be proud to wear their new tie-dye shirts to class.

Supplies needed:

  • White t-shirts
  • Dye
  • Laundry detergent
  • Buckets
  • Rubber bands
  • Gloves
  • Ziploc bags

Start of School Arcade Party (Middle School)

Host an arcade party at Funland for your kids and their friends from school. Funland has some of Deep Creek Lake’s favorite arcade games, go-karts, mini golf, rock climbing, and more. They also serve DC pizza, Deep Creek’s best pizza on the lake.

Your kids and their friends will have a great time at Funland, and will enjoy talking about it at school. This will be a memorable experience and help them calm the nerves that come from the start of a new school year.

Family Kickball Game (All Ages)

If your family likes a little friendly competition, a start of school family kickball game might be a great option! Invite families from your child’s school to a local baseball field and start a game together. You only need a kickball and two teams. Choose positions for each player and have someone keep score. You can also have families bring food and beverage items to enjoy after the game!

Family and Friends Cookout (High School)

Who doesn’t love a good cookout? Invite your high schooler’s friends and their families to a fun cookout. Reserve a picnic shelter at Deep Creek State Park for your cookout. Shelters are available for up to 75 people and include 3 charcoal grills.

We suggest creating a theme. You can do a chili cookoff contest or even a bacon-everything meal. See what great creative ideas your high schooler and their friends come up with!

Go on a Hiking Adventure (Elementary/Middle School)

Take your child and a group of other elementary or  middle schoolers to go hiking at Kendall Trail. It is an all-age friendly trail, great for kids. We also suggest bringing a nature activity book like Backpacker Explorer: On the Nature Trail. Kids will have a great time spotting the trees, insects, flowers, and other parts of nature.
