Snow Activities in Deep Creek Lake

Snow is meant to be enjoyed. If you want to play in the powder, come to Deep Creek Lake where winter comes to life. With an average seasonal snowfall of over 100 inches of snow, chances are you will encounter the white stuff if you visit DCL between November and March.  If you were here during the winter of 2009-2010, the area broke a snowfall record with 262 inches of snow in just one season. Now, not every season sees epic snow totals, but we recommend you pack your hat, gloves, and boots and get to the mountains this weekend. Here are a few local snow activities to try:

Get moving.

Your feet are the answer; just add equipment. The mountain is open and the lifts are running at Wisp Resort. If skiing is your passion, you’re in for a treat because you can access seven lifts to 35 trails across the mountain.  For the snowboarders, there’s a Terrain Park to provide thrills and spills on the rail, bonk, or spine. Take a different approach to the mountain and experience the Bear Paw Tubing Park where the downhill adventure is an inflated ride of laughs and snow-spray. If steep inclines aren’t for you, try your skill at the ice rink. Make your feet happy, get them in the snow!

Make stuff.

Snow is a great medium for the artist at heart.  Start with snow angels; a tradition that spans generations, is an easy and invigorating activity in which everyone can participate. In that same spirit, when was the last time you made a snowman?  With almost perfect conditions at Deep Creek Lake, the snow is legendary for snowmen (and women); remember to bring an extra hat and scarf for your new frozen friends.

If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, gather for an epic snowball battle from the confines of your self-constructed snow fort. Let your imagination drift to all the creative snow possibilities.

Step back.

Enjoy nature’s winter wonderland, the old-fashioned way. Bundle up with a thermos of cocoa and experience a winter afternoon from a horse-drawn sleigh at the Circle R Ranch. Hear the sounds of sleigh bells mixed with giggles from the youngest to the oldest family members. Step back in time where technology takes a back seat to mother nature’s powerful message of sustainability. Embrace the scenery, fresh air, and ethos of winter the way your ancestors did back in the day.

Winter at Deep Creek Lake is like a surreal encounter into another world; when you see it for yourself be prepared to gasp in amazement. While you’re in the mountains, take time for a tour of Blue Moon Rising, an Eco-friendly event venue for every occasion, including winter woodland weddings. From family reunions to destination weddings, our cabins offers a unique experience for every guest. Schedule your tour here and we’ll see you in the snow.
