Deep Creek Lake History

Today, Deep Creek Lake in Maryland is known as a four-season vacation and tourism spot, but it hasn’t always been that way. In the early 1900’s, Deep Creek Lake history shows that the area was occupied by farms, schools, and private residences. A vision was then conceived of combining the Youghiogheny (locals refer to this as “the yock”) River and Deep Creek stream into a dam and powerhouse to be used for electricity production.

Deep Creek Lake History

The planning first began in 1908, but plans fell through until 1921, when the Youghiogheny Hydro-Electric Corporation was granted access to construct dams across Deep Creek and the Youghiogheny River. Deep Creek dam and powerhouse was completed by Mr. Charles Hawley & Company, Inc., and proven to be an efficient source of energy production.

Acquisition of land came next in 1923, where an acre of land cost $55 on average. Farms, a railroad, highways, and bridges were purchased and constructed by 1,000 men who were employed and housed in what is now the Red Run Condominiums. In 1925, the powerhouse became open for operation. Water from the lake is transferred by a 7,000 foot power tunnel to the powerhouse, and is capable of producing 18 megawatts of electricity.

Deep Creek Lake Today

Tourism wasn’t as common in the early 1900’s as it is today. Over time, Deep Creek Lake grew in popularity as businesses began booming in the area and a desire arose for vacation cabin rentals around the lake. It also became an inspiring place to live and enjoy “lake life.”

Today, Deep Creek Lake is a four-season vacation destination with areas of hiking, golfing, water sports, outdoor yoga, snowshoeing, shopping, concerts, events, and more (see our list of Deep Creek Lake activities). Deep Creek Lake is owned by Maryland and is the largest freshwater lake in the state. Its span is 13 miles long with 65 miles of shoreline, and covers nearly 3,900 acres.
