Deep Creek Lake is Pet Friendly

Does your dog love a road trip in the car or maybe a long walk in the woods? Pamper your pet and bring them on your next trip to Deep Creek Lake. With plenty of activities for pets and their humans, Western Maryland is becoming a family destination, even for the dog. Explore the pet-friendly options below and add them to the itinerary of your next family trip.

As an ongoing project, the Deep Creek Lions Club opened the first public Off-Leash Dog Run in the area. With free admission, the 40,000 square foot off-leash dog park includes a double-door entry system, waste disposal, and separate fenced areas for small and large dogs. Bring your furry friends to the park for a local meet and greet.

With eight state parks in the county, all are pet-friendly, with a few exceptions. All parks require pets be licensed and have all required vaccinations, including a rabies vaccination. Pets must be on a leash in public pedestrian areas, however, pets may be off-leash and under voice control while swimming in designated areas or hunting (with the appropriate permit). So, enjoy a stroll at Swallow Falls or a dip in Deep Creek Lake with your best friend. Be sure to review MD State Parks pet policy before you set out.

If you plan to spend a few days at the lake, book a stay at dog-friendly Blue Moon Rising, our tiny cabin resort perched atop a hillside overlooking Deep Creek Lake. Blue Moon Rising offers hiking trails, dense forests, and an eco-tourist experience you and your dog will treasure.

After a long day of sniffing trails, you and Fido can visit the many pet-friendly area eateries. Most local restaurants with outdoor seating allow your pets to dine with you outside, while on a leash. As always, service dogs are welcome, inside or out. Establishments like MoonShadow, Mountain State Brewing, Canoe on the Run, Traders Coffee House, and Archies BBQ offer seasonal outdoor seating to accommodate you and your pet.

Of course, when you travel with Fido don’t forget the doggie etiquette and always clean up after your pet. Be mindful and respectable to others around you, some may be allergic, while others are may be terrified of dogs. As a dog owner it is a privilege to share a hike or a dining experience with your canine, so do your best to keep your pet under control.
