Maryland has become a favored destination not only for its beauty, but for the wine. If you want to plan a weekend getaway around a delicious libation, then Deep Creek Lake is the place you want to be. While the world seems to disagree on just about everything, one thing most can agree on is the romantic appeal of wine. From millennials to baby boomers, wine brings people and culture together in the name of good taste. Deep Creek Lake is host to several “Saturday” wine tastings and tours; here are a few we found around the lake:
Deep Creek Cellars – With the distinction as the one and only winery in Garrett County, this small winery has been in operation less than a decade but making a real name for themselves in the wine business. If you’ve ever been to western Maryland, you know the climate can be brutal and the growing season short, but this winery withstands mother nature one season at a time only to create a Pinot Noir among the best ever in the eastern US. With five vintages now, they’ve created astonishing wine in a challenging climate and you’ve got to taste the results. Just a short drive from DCL, Deep Creek Cellars is open Thursday – Saturday. Call (301)746-4349 to arrange a tour and tasting this summer.
Fireside Deli – Located along Glendale Rd., this shop brings the world to Deep Creek. Specializing in the unique micro-batch and boutique wines, you won’t want to stop there. With an array of cheeses and a fresh panini menu, pack your picnic basket and head to the DCL State Park just over the hill. Stick around on Saturdays between 12-4:00 to taste extraordinary hand-picked selections. If you want a custom wine tasting experience; start with a call to (301)387-5518.
McHenry Beverage – If you are looking for selection or your favorite wine, you can bet it will be on the shelf here. With the largest selection of wine, beer, and liquor, you can shop for everything you need in one place. Be sure to stop in every Saturday for wine tasting from 1-5:00 and take home a bottle of your favorite vintage to drink, share, or gift. If you decided to make a purchase, ask about the case discounts for wine.
Mark your calendar – If you love wine, art, and fresh mountain air then plan a weekend trip to Deep Creek’s Art and Wine Festival. Located in McHenry at the fairgrounds, taste over 200 wines and stroll acres of artwork. Both art and wine are available for purchase at the event. Spend the day or spend the weekend, but there will be plenty of wine for all! Click here for advanced tickets.
With all that wine comes “great responsibility.” Please drive responsibly and stay close by at Blue Moon Rising. After you “try and buy” your favorite wine, bring it back to a cozy eco-friendly cabin or sit by our campfire with your favorite vintage of the day. Wine is meant to be shared and enjoyed, and we’ve got just the place to do it.
