New Years Resolutions with Positive Impact

Often a New Year’s resolution is focused on a personal improvement or goal for the betterment of your lifestyle, family, or well-being, right? Does your resolution include something for the benefit of the big picture like: the environment, your community, or the economy? If not, consider a resolution that includes sustainable ways to make a difference. According to the good folks at Eco Centered, sustainable New Year’s Resolutions are easily within reach. Their “Can’t Fail” Guide to sustainable New Year’s Resolutions, sets in motion a mindset to make the world a better place and your life a healthier one. Here’s a few of their recommendations to get started:

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Pick the things you’d like to see change in your household, the local community, or the environment. Start small with things you control at home: compost food scraps or recycle cans and glass, or start a garden. Once you get in the habit, reach out in your community for volunteer opportunities to benefit the sustainability of your area in ways like: a community garden, recycling and trash removal days, or campaigns to raise sustainability awareness.

“Properly used, positive reinforcement is extremely powerful.” This holds true for a resolution that takes time. Create celebrations along the way for milestone achievements. Reward yourself and your family for accomplishments and continued commitment to the resolution. If you were able to use less energy in your household than the national average, that’s worth a celebration!

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Like most New Year’s resolutions, it starts off great, empowered, and ready to conquer. However, after a few months, the commitment often turns to boredom. To avoid failure, make a calendar of monthly commitments to your cause; it is much easier to track your successes and see actual change happen from month to month.

We are committed to sustainability and our New Year’s resolutions continue to include ways to better serve our community, guests, and the planet. Sustainability is the cornerstone of BMR, where nothing goes to waste. We operate by the guiding principle that comfort and beauty doesn’t have to be sacrificed for humans to live lightly on this beautiful planet.  See what we mean, take a virtual tour of our cabins here.
